Caching in Google App Engine

I want to use caching for my web application that is already deployed in Google App Engine. It works fine but I want to know that it is a right approach to use external cache which is in a datacenter of our choice. I believe that external cache is going to make our application go down if huge amount of requests are coming in a short span of time. Please help me regarding this.

I think you should do something like you already said, but on your way you will need to cache your data inside App engine. You have two ways to do that.
1) You can store your data in memcache: memcache is a free service provided by Google where you can store data as long as you want and it is not deleted until the end of the time you specified.
2) You can use Datastore, this is the way I used on GAE. You have the option to do so with or without queries but with queries you have much more control. For example you can use one entry for each visitor (Visitor key), so you will know if a visitor is using your application for the first time or the fifteenth time.
As an advice you should read this document which explains in depth what you can do with Datastore.
